Where OpsCodex fits — and where it doesn't
Camunda, SAP Signavio and ARIS are mature products with years of reference customers behind them. OpsCodex is not trying to replace them across the board. This page says where it is the better fit, and — just as usefully — where it is not.
First, what is not a differentiator any more
"AI turns your documents into BPMN" is no longer a reason to choose one tool over another. SAP Signavio supports AI-assisted generation of models from text, and ARIS offers AI-assisted modelling too. If a vendor's comparison page leads with the AI, it is selling you a feature the incumbents already ship. The question worth asking is what happens on either side of the drafting step: how a draft becomes officially approved, and what reaches the people doing the work afterwards.
1. The day after approval
Most process initiatives do not fail at modelling. They fail the day after: the approved diagram lands in a repository, and the shop floor keeps working from a Word file last saved in 2023. OpsCodex treats the approved model as the source for what people actually see — a concierge that answers questions in plain language from approved processes only, work instructions generated from the approved BPMN so they cannot drift from it, and a browser extension that puts both next to the ERP or MES where the work happens. This is the part with no direct equivalent in the modelling suites, and it is the reason to look at OpsCodex at all.
2. On-premise without an asterisk
OpsCodex is single-tenant and on-premise by default, on your own hardware, with AI inference pointed at your provider account and your key — or at a model you host yourself. SAP Signavio is a cloud product. If your process documentation cannot leave your perimeter, that difference decides the evaluation before any feature comparison starts.
3. Governance that is enforced, with exceptions on the record
All serious tools in this space have approval workflows. What differs is how hard the separation is and what happens when someone needs around it. In OpsCodex the author–reviewer–approver split is the default and cannot be bypassed silently: an exception requires an administrator, a completed review, a written justification, and it lands in the audit trail as its own decision with its own status. 4. What it takes to start
A Signavio or ARIS introduction is a programme. OpsCodex is a single Linux host with Docker, your existing documents, and named reviewers. That is a genuine advantage for a first governed process — and a genuine limitation if you need the breadth of an enterprise architecture suite.
When the others are the better choice
- Choose Camunda when processes must run, not just be documented
- Camunda's strength is executing and orchestrating BPMN — services, tasks, state, retries, at scale. OpsCodex governs what a process is and exports standards-conformant BPMN XML; it is not an execution engine. The two are complements, and OpsCodex exports are meant to be readable by engines like Camunda.
- Choose SAP Signavio when you are deep in the SAP landscape
- If your processes are SAP processes and you want mining, reference content and modelling in one hub that is built to sit against that landscape, that integration is worth more than anything on this page.
- Choose ARIS when the scope is enterprise architecture
- ARIS covers far more than process models — architecture, risk and compliance frameworks, large federated organisations with their own governance apparatus. If that is the scope, a focused governance tool is the wrong shape.
- Look elsewhere entirely for process mining
- OpsCodex does not do process mining. If your question is "what do our processes actually look like in the event log", that is a different category of product.
The short version
OpsCodex fits an industrial or regulated organisation with five things in common: hundreds of SOPs and slide decks to consolidate; approvals that have to hold up in an audit; process data that cannot go in a public cloud; BPMN as the exchange format; and no appetite for a suite rollout to get there. If two or more of those do not describe you, one of the products above probably suits you better — and we would rather you find that out from this page than from a pilot.
